A CELEBRATION OF LIFE: RISING ABOVE BREAST CANCER is a candid, inspiring call to action. Through their own heartening stories, five-, ten-, even, twenty-year survivors will encourage women to overcome fear by learning the facts and move them to take control of their health and treatment. Health professionals and other experts discuss the many factors including fear and bias-based barriers to medical treatment that too often keep African American women from receiving the help they need.

A CELEBRATION OF LIFE: RISING ABOVE BREAST CANCER introduces viewers to women who have risen to the challenge and are spreading the word among their friends and neighbors. Women physicians in Los Angeles take their message about early detection to a different church pulpit each month. Specially trained staff at New York's Harlem Hospital help women navigate the daunting maze of treatment options and support services necessary to become survivors. Nurses in Chicago take their message to beauty parlors. Neighbor women who are "natural helpers" spread the word and calm fears about mammograms in rural North Carolina. And a Washington DC-based support group shares the inspiring, comforting stories of their own survival and provides new members with mentors to guide their way.

A Celebration Of Life, presented by WHUT (Howard University Television) premiered in April 2001 on PBS stations nationwide and continues to air through 2003.
